Holland did a deal he could. The Oil are in the playoffs and anything can happen. If you guys feel this team was good enough before the deadline to go all the way, trading for Kulikov doesn't really impact that as the team is only slightly better with him in. He's another 3rd, occasionally 2nd pairing guy...
Not sure what the expectation was going in unless the team was to move a core piece.

Sean Maloughney: Thoughts on the Oilers Trade Deadline - freelancer
What I dont understand & there were panels referring the link to the Oilers was why didnt the Oilers offer up a 2022 2nd for Ryan & have Calgary eat 1/2 like they did for Rittch? Yes that would have been an overpay but Ryan would have definitely fit the 3rd line C & excellent PK guy. Im baffled why the Flames didnt move him at all. Im thinking maybe ownership wouldnt let Treliving eat any more salary because of his poor coach hiring decisions. I dont know but that was a deal that should have been made that would have benefitted both clubs. |

Because it would have been a ridiculous overpayment to a divisional/provincial rival. |

Yeah, I just don't see the point this year. We are in the playoffs, roll the dice with what we have, keep our assets. The team is finally doing some OK drafting in the last couple of years, and ELC's are stupid important for teams right now. |

It had to be this way .. No point moving picks or prospects for mediocre rentals that may or may not help.
Looking forward to the off season , when there is money to be spent . If Nuge decides to leave there will be even more $$ to spend .
We just need to convince Seattle that James Neal would be a great fit. |

Well that 26 mill is going to get eaten up quick just to replace what you have now. Barrie is going to cost more, Nuge is going to get at least what the cap is now as well on an extension. Still need to resign a goalie unless you think Koskinen is that #1 goalie next year. You have to replace Larsen & a top 4 D is going to cost at least or more than the $4.1 Larsen is getting. Those 4 positions arent going to leave you much room to upgrade that depth. With McDavid & Dris in their prime, the window is now, not sure you should be quibbling about some 2nd & 3rd round picks for rentals that may help versus no help. By the time players you get with those picks are ready to play in the NHL, McDavid & Dri's contracts are going to expire. Oh well, good luck in the playoffs guys, you have more to look forward to than us.

Honesty Jujhar fits the bill fine. Inconsistent at times, but I don't think Ryan would be an upgrade worth the overpay. Top 6 left wing is the one place I would be ok with an overpay. McDavid deserves it! |

And if Nuge leaves there is another giant hole to fill, which will cost the same to fill it... |

For me, I think it is an either/or with Larsen and Barrie next year, either Bear or Bouchard fillls in the other top 4 RD spot. I like Nuge, but I hope that this season causes his extension to come in around what he is currently making. I expect them to bring Smith back on another 1 year at 2'ish, because. Biggest question mark at this time is Klefbom, IMO.
I just don't see this team as a rental away from competing, but if the picks were parted with for a guy with future as well (like a Rakell type), then that would be different. |

Nobody is touching that contract. Holland will need to eat $2m x 4 years to buy him out. That should leave him about $29m to sign Nuge, Barrie, Nurse, Yammer, Larsson, JJ, Kahun. Replace Chaisson, Shore, Kulikov. Is that enough room to do all that? Maybe, but it leaves zero room to improve the roster.

I see it more as a Klef or Barrie. If Klefbom is healthy I don't think the team moves on from him. Larsson shouldn't be getting a raise, actually should save some money on re-signing him. Only way I would re-sign Barrie is if Klef is not coming back AND he doesn't want a huge payday. |

Nurse has another year, Barrie is likely to take a huge payday elsewhere, Nuge, Larsson, Shore, and Khaira won't be seeing much if any raise, Chaisson is replaceable for less. Yam gets a bridge deal. It will still be tight for sure, but it's doable. We need one top 6 left wing and the top 6 is set. Bottom could be filled out with ELC guys, Marody, McLeod Benson etc... Bouchard will likely have full time spot. There are options for improvement. Maybe someone really wants to take Kassian... |

If Klefbom is back, Barrie doesn't get re-signed while Larsson does.
No Klef, No Larsson, but we get Barrie. Yay. 5-6 for Barrie, 3 to Larsson + Klef's 4.167.
Nuge has to be re-signed for around 6 (11-13 gone)
Yam probably makes 3.5-4m (14.5-17m gone)
Gotta rework that entire bottom 6.
Haas, Ennis to make 1-1.5m each (Or Khaira & Shore either combo works). These will be the fourth liners + Archibald (16.5-20m gone)
Marody and Benson should be called up next season, both will make around 1 million. (18.5-22m gone)
Still have to sign a 3C (Adam Lowry, maybe?) and a top 6 left wing (Hall on a contract like Barrie?)
Holloway is an option... maybe the third line and play Benson with McDavid or Draisaitl? I'm not sure. McLeod is another year away. |

I see it more of a right side vs left side issue, so that is why i think it is only one of Barrie or Larsson who return. So far, our experimentation with playing D on their off side has been less than spectacular. Russell isn't much worse on the opposite side, but how could he be. Bouchard needs the spot that either Barrie or Larsson currently occupy. |

Holland went in last year and there was no point doing it twice when we probably arent winning
